WILL CALASPARRA HAVE A CONVENTIONAL VIA VERDE?

The planned Via Verde in Calasparra currently includes maintaining the railway lines for use by specially adapted bicycles.
This was announced on Radio Calasparra by Juan Soria, Head of the Vías Verdes Region de Murcia Consortium.
The motive for the “rail bicycles track,” which would run from Calasparra to Hellin, is to avoid shutting the door on the future of a local train service following the closure of Calasparra station in 2019.
However, Cieza has also signed up with the Via Verdes Consortium for a “conventional” Via Verde, and this would involve removing the rails which would isolate Calasparra from any rail links.
The Murcia region has 220 kilometres of Via Verdes: the Vía Verde del Noroeste; the Vía Verde del Campo de Cartagena,( between Cartagena, Alhama de Murcia, Fuente Álamo and Totana); the Via Verde de Mazarrón; the Vía Verde del Embarcadero de El Hornillo in Águilas; the Vía Verde de Almendricos (Lorca); and the Vía Verde del Chicharra ( uniting Cieza, Jumilla and Yecla with the Comunidad of Valencia).
