Calasparra has been enjoying lower temperatures over the past few days while the ret of Spain has been sizzling.
Now it is over and we are in for a heatwave with temperatures in the late 30´s and early 40´s.
Calasparra, like most of the Murcia región, is on high alert for forest fires. The high temperatures mean there is an “extreme” risk of fire and the Cordination Centre for Emergencies is appealing to everyone to be on their guard.
At this time of the year burning prunings and, garden waste etc is banned so if you see smoke there is every chance it is something to worry about.
If you do see smoke and or see the beginnings of a fire do not hesitate to call the emergency number 112. Early warnings often mean a fire is easier to control and extinguish.
And be careful not to unwittingly cause a fire yourselves. Cigarette butts which are not fully extinguished are a common cause of fire after being dropped in the countryside or thrown from a car windows.
Barbecues, unless they are the covered type can be a fire risk especially if you live near open countryside.
The high temperatures are also dangerous for children, the elderly and the ill. However, everyone is warned not to work or do physical activity during the hot hours of the day and to take the usual precautions such as drinking plenty of water, staying in the shade and avoiding alcohol,
Stay safe in the sun!!
