The Mayoress of Calasparra, Teresa Garcia, told a press conference this week that the Town Hall were under no obligation to reinstate the weekly market but were planning to do so within the limits of the State of Alarm and public safety.
She explained that the Town Hall was currently consulting with medical and public health experts on the measures that could be taken to ensure the market did not become a focal point of contagion.
The only place where the capacity of the market could be strictly controlled was the Recinta Ferial, she said, and it would have to operate at 25% capacity.
“We are watching and monitoring behavior over these first days of Phase One,” she said, “before taking any decisions.”
She emphasized that the safety of the market depended on residents behaving with responsibility and respecting the precautionary measures.
The level of infections in Calasparra, compared to neighbouring municipal areas, was “alarming and worrying,” she said. “Clearly we don’t want to return to Phase O but if there is a new wave of infections that will be what would happen.”
