Participants in Saturday´s walk in the Cañaverosa Nature Reserve were privileged to witness a magical moment when their guides freed two birds which had been rescued and cared for in the Centro de Recuperación de Fauna Silvestre ‘El Valle’.
The two birds, a kestral and a Leonard Vulture, had fully recovered and found fit to fend for themselves.
The centre takes in some 2,000 wild animals annually, some of which are in danger of extinction. Generally, they depend on the cooperation of the public , who can call the emerency number 112 if they find an injured animal or bird.
It was an emotional moment for the 26 walkers, which was marked by a round of spontaneous applause.
The ribbon forest, along the Banks of the Segura, in the Cañaversa is the last remaining “bosque de ribera” in the Murcia region. It is 12k long and stretches through Calasparra and Moratalla.
Saturday´s walk was organised to mark the World Day of the Birds and was organised by the Office for Social Economic Growth of the Environment, which is a subsidiary of the Department of Water, Agriculture and the Environment.
For more information about the Nature Reserve and about future activities you can go to the “hut” in the Sanctuary grounds, alongside the toilets near the main entrance.
