The Municipal Library is adapting to the technological age with Internet access, the digitization of resources, and a reference point in the town centre.
These are just some of the novelties introduced to make the library more modern and accessible.
Calasparra library has some eight million books and the new system will allow lenders to reserve books over the Internet as well as check out local and regional resources.
Yesterday, October 24, was the Day of the Library. An event celebrated since 1997 which aims to promote the public
lending service.
The public library in Calasparra was opened on July 17, 1957 by the Mayor, Jesús Martínez-Corbalán Beyret, and organized by local teacher, Don Luís Costa Hernández. The initial budget was 10,000 pesetas.
Originally the library was installed on the upper floor of a warehouse in front of the Municipal Food Market (now a public car park in the centre of the town). It moved to the Casa de la Cultura on August 1, 1990 and officially opened by the former librarian, Isabel Rubio Llorente.
