The Mayoress, Teresa García, has unfurled a commemorative banner on the facade of the Town Hall to mark the International Day of Prehistoric Cave Art and to underline Calasparra´s place, with other Euroepan regions, as part of the “Rupestre” Terrority:
Calasparra showcased its contribution to prehistoric cave art through the Abrigos del Pozo, declared World Patrimony by UNESCO.
The municipal areas of the region joined this day of commemoration, promoted by the Federation of Municipal Areas, the University of Murcia and the Association, Friends of Prehistoric Cave Art, to raise the profile of local patrimony and Calasparra´s role as a member of a select group within Europe.
Calasparra possesses of the six sites in the Murcia region which forms part of a cultural route promoted by the European Council.
The banner unfurled by the Mayoress today features the most emblematic figures from the Abridos del Pozo.
From tomorrow, Saturday, these sites will be signposted and included in the cultural itinerary “Paths of European Prehistoric Arte,” with a plaque installed at the foot of the caves. Other areas in the region to benefit from this initiative will be Cehegin, Cieza, Jumilla, Moratalla and Yecla.
The main act of the European Days of Cultural Patrimony included a visit by the Friends of Prehistoric Cave Art to the Abrigos del Pozo in Calasparra. The delegation included the Government Delegate of Murcia and former Mayor of Calasparra, Jose Velez.
