CALASPARRA MARKS DAY AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

The facade of Calasparra Town Hall was iluminated with violet lighting on November 25 to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence. Against Women.
In the «Cupula» (Plaza de Emilio Perez Pinero) the Mayoress of Calasparra, Teresa Garcia read a manifesto and chaired an event to mark the day.
It was in 1981 when militants and activitists in favour of womens´ rights first protested against domestic violence. The origin of the protest was to honour the memory of the Mirabel sisters, three politcal activitists in the Dominican Repuyblic, who were brutally assasinated in 1960 at the orders of the Dominican Governor, Rafael Trujillo.
Two years previously (1979) the United Nations secured the approval of the Convention for the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against women. However, the violence against women and female children continues to be a grave problem throughout the world.
In 1993 the United Nations Organisation emitted a resolution which included the emblematic «Declaration of the Elimination of Violence Against Women, which sets the bases for a future free of domestic violence.
In 2020 November 25 was the day designated the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women when governments and organisations all over the world are invited to corrdinate activities to raise public awareness of violence against women.
