The commemorative plaque celebrating the inauguration of the Cenajo dam and reservoir has been removed by the Segura Water Board in accordance with the Ley de Memoria (Memory Law).
The damn was built by the forced labour of political prisoners during Franco´s regime and many hundreds died and were unceremoniously buried by cement during the construction.
The Ley de Memoria requires that symbols and plaques glorifying the fascist regime are removed.
Cenajo was inaugurated in 1963.
The plaque was removed at the request of the Mayoress of Moratalla, Candi Marin.
The United Left party are requesting that a substitute plague commemorates the political prisoners who died during the construction work and those who were persecuted by Franco.
