VOLUNTEERS FROM CALASPARRA HELP FLOOD VICTIMS

Los Alcázares, is the area worst affected regionally  by the recent torrential rain and flooding as local rivers burst their banks sending a torrent of water into the town cutting it off and leaving many residents stranded in their homes.
Los Alcazares Town Hall called for volunteers, individuals and businesses and services, to come to the aid of residents struggling to cope with the after effects of the worst weather seen in the region for over 100 years: Calasparra has answered that call.
A group of volunteers, including three local councilors, have spent the last two days in the area, with members of the Civil Protection, also volunteers, clearing water and mud from people´s homes.
Alcazares Town Hall has also appealed for cleaning and hygiene materials to be donated as well as volunteers to help clear up (see Facebook for details).
An unprecedented avalanche of water burst the banks of various riverbeds in the Cartagena countryside and sent a waterfall of 200 litres per square metre through the streets of Los  Alcazares, flooding houses and shops. Some 500 residents had to be rescued on Thursday night by the emergency services and many more over the next6 few days.  Fifty five roads were cut off, most of them near Los Alcazares, cutting the town off.
San Javier has also been seriously affected.
The volunteers from Calasparra include Councillors, Antonio Merino, Jordi Arce and Juan Bernal and members of the Civil Protection.
