The emergency services were unable to save the life of a 60 year old man after a tree fell at the Sanctuary del la Virgin de la Esperanza yesterday, Saturday August 22.
Numerous calls were received by the Emergency Services 112 from 1.48pm onwards and two witnesses attempted to adminster first aid to the victim.
Witnesses reported that the tree had fallen on the victim near the river and the parking spaces.
As a result of the accident a 60 year old man was gravely injured and two people who saw the incident attempted to adminster first aid while waiting for the emergency services.
An ambulance with life support attended the scene and continued to try and help the injured man, however, despite all these efforts the death of the victim, a resident of Zeneta, was confirmed.
Another ambulance also attended the scene and firemen from the Fire and Rescue Team in Caravaca.
The Sanctuary Foundation has issued the following statement:
«Due to today’s events in the area near the river Segura at the Sanctuary all the terraces and accesses to the river have been closed.,
This measure has been taken for motives of citizen security and will remain in force until further notice.
We appeal to anyone who is near the Sanctuary to strictly respect the cordoned off areas and the security indications.»
The «Pregon» (the official opening speech of the Pilgrimage) due to be held yesterday was cancelled.
Calasparra Town Hall has declared «profound sympathy» for the tragic event that ocurred yesterday at the Sanctuary.
«In these moments of extreme pain we accompany the family and loved ones of the deceased and send our most sincere condolences.
Today Calasparra is in mourning and shares the pain of the family».
