Calasparra Town Hall and the Nature Association of the South East have signed a Custody of Territory agreement which guarantees the recuperation and conservation of 300 hectares of local beauty spots.
The area is the framework for the LIFE+Ripisilvanatura Project and affects five areas including the Cañón de Almadenes (Special Conservation Zone: Sierras and Vega Alta of the Rivers Segura, Alhárabe and Moratalla (ES6200004); and the are covered by Special Protection for Birds (Sierra del Molino, Quípar Reservoir and the Llanos del Cagitán) which form the Red Natura 2000.
The Mayor of Calasparra, José Vélez and the Director de ANSE, Pedro García, were accompanied by the Head of the local Department of Environment, Ricardo García and supported by The General Directorate of the Environment led by Consuelo Rosauro, as they signed the agreement.
The environmental values of these areas include the ribbon forests along the rivers and wildlife such as otters, peregrine falcons, turtles and eagles.
One of the main aims of LIFE+Ripisilvanatura, financed by the EU, has been to recuperate the ribbon forests and control invasive species, such as the canes along the river banks and installing bat boxes along the rice fields as a means of insect control.
