The best of Calasparra stepped forward on Saturday night for a thoroughly Spanish cultural contribution to raise funds for the victims of the Lorca earthquake.
Throughout the evening volunteers from the local Red Cross reminded a crowded Cine Rosales that while on one hand thousands of our neighbours remained homeless and were still dependent on assistance from the Red Cross on the other Lorca had “almost resumed normal life” with schools, hospitals and local authority buildings now fully functioning.
Calasparra’s dance group, Aliesan, from tiny tots to teenagers offered traditional Spanish dancing in a variety of colourful costumes and the OAPs, the Rondalla performed Murcian songs and dances.
Later the new head of the Culture Department, Cristine Trujillo opted for a series of standard and modern ballads, some in English, but it was the Flamenco that stole the show.
Both young and not so young Calasparrians showed an incredible talent for this recently acclaimed “national musical treasure” in good voice and perfectly accompanied by local guitarists.
At the end of the evening all the artists took to the stage for the grand final, a raucous half Flamenco half home grown offering which almost brought the house down.
