SHOPKEEPERS OPPOSE TRAFFIC BAN IN THE CORREDERA

A public meeting to discuss the proposal by the United Left Coalition to pedestrianise the Plaza de la Corredera ended in disarray last week after local shopkeepers claimed it would ruin their businesses.
This morning, Monday, the owners of businesses in the square are holding “urgent talks” with the Mayor of Calasparra.
The proposal to ban traffic from the square received the approval of all three political parties at a recent full Town Hall meeting when it was agreed to put the proposal out for public consultation. The public meeting held by the IU last week was the first step in the process.
“The meeting was disappointing,” said Ricardo Garcia, Coordinator of the IU, “We want to improve the quality of life for Calasparrians and their children by making the square a safe, central meeting point where people can socialize in peace and safety but the shopkeepers claim if motorist don´t pass through the square their businesses will be ruined.”
