A stockbreeder, with more than 400 pigs, has been reported by the Guardia Civil for environmental, administrative and animal health offences and could face fines of between 3,000€ and 1,200,000€.
The Guardia Civil Service for the Protection of Nature, SEPRONA, began investigating the pig farm after members of the public complained about alleged irregularities which were causing strong smells and a possible threat to health.
When they inspected the premises they found more than 400 pigs, including sows and piglets, destined for human consumption, suffering deficiencies in maintenance, health and lack of attention.
They also found more than a dozen dead pigs and bone parts in different states of descomposition in various areas plus the traces of various medicines which had apparently been administered by the owner without veterinary control.
The Guardia Civil have verified that the owner of the farm is the same person who, in 2014, was prosecuted for similar offences on another site in Calasparra, where some 50 cadavers of pigs had been treated incorrectly.
The owner of the farm has been charged with adminstrative and environmental offences, involving the treatment of residues and water; grave deficiencies in the installations and slurry pits; the lack of necessary documentation for the activity carried out; and offences against the health of animals.
Calasparra Town Hall, the Director General of Stockbreeding and Fish in Murcia and the Water Board have all been informed of the alleged offences.
