OPPOSITION PARTIES REJECT MUNICIPAL BUDGET

After a long, stormy debate the ruling PSOE party has suffered its first major defeat of the legislature as the opposition, Partido Popular, joined with the single, but casting vote, of the United Left to reject the municipal budget for 2012.
This year´s budget, which according to the IU should have been presented in the first three months of 2012, was presented at last night´s full Town Hall Meeting for approval. However, in the event both opposition parties voted against it in a move described by Deputy Mayor, Pepe Veléz, as “against the interests of the residents.”
While the IU objected to delays in producing the budget the PP alleged “dubious accounting” and “unrealistic accounts” which would leave the Town Hall with an “enormous deficit.”
Both opposition parties voted against increases in the price of sporting activities at the Municipal Sports Centre, from four to eight euros, which were, according to the PSOE, necessary to maintain the service.
