The regional government of Murcia is considering fracking applications by the company, Oil and Gas Capital, which would affect Cieza, Calasparra, Abarán and Jumilla, despite the opposition of local mayors.
Now the Mayors of Calasparra, Jose Velez, with his colleagues from the other affected municipal areas are demanding that the region tighten up the requirements and conditions for successful fracking applications.
In the document prepared by the Mayors they demand a law which obliges the regional Government to strengthen environmental and health requirements for fracking projects.
There are currently five projects being considered by the General Director of Industry, Energy and Mines, lodged by the Oil and Gas Capìtal company, two of which affect Calasparra.
Apparently, a similar, more restrictive, law was introduced in Castilla La Mancha in March and, as a result, the Oil and Gas Capital Company withdraw its application for hydraulic fracturing in the area.
