The Head of the regional Department of Water, Agriculture, Stock and Fish, Miguel Ángel del Amor, accompanied the Mayor of Calasparra, José Vélez Fernández, yesterday to visit the recently completed final stages of the automatic drip irrigation system installed in the local area.
The regional government funded some 40% of the total cost of 51,355 euros with an investment of 20,542 euros.
Some 1,400 members of the local farmers union (Comunidad de Regantes) use the new system on a 1,095 hectares of land.
The restoration has included work on the main water canal which will save 20% of water previously lost through filters and leaks.
The Head of the local Department of Environment, Ricardo Garcia; the Head of the local PP, Maria Marin, and the Technical Director of the project, Ginés Fernández, among others, formed part of the delegation.
