A DIFFERENT WAY TO CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN´S DAY

There will be no mass rallies, no parades though the streets, no crowds in  the Plaza de la Corredera but Calasparra has found different ways of marking International Women´s Day, today, March 8.
Due to the constraints imposed by the Covid-19 epidemic the demonstrations for women´s rights, traditional all over the world today, can´t take place. However, nobody is allowing this special day to pass unnoticed.
During this week posters celebrating the role of women and supporting women´s rights have appeared in the streets of Calasparra.
Local schools have held special events and Radio Calasparra has a day long programme of interviews and activities.
Calasparra Town Hall has published a manifesto supporting women´s rights on the municipal facebook page and has also repositioned the sign posting of the Plaza de la Picaoras ( alongside the municipal sports running track) and planted four jacandra trees, which produce purple flowers at springtime: the colour chosen to commemorate equality for women.
The Head of the local Department of Equality, Cristina Ruiz, announced that the Town Hall had been looking for different ways to mark International Women´s Day, given that people “could not demonstrate in the streets” due to Covid-19, to reclaim women´s rights and reverse inequalities.
“For this reason,” she said, “we came up with the idea for something that would not be lost in time, and moreover, which reminds us of the work women do and the conditions under which they do it, through the sustainability and visibility of these trees with the blanket of purple flowers they produce.”
