Calasparra Town Hall and various local agricultural cooperatives claim that plans to reduce the amount of water transferred through the so called “Trasvase Tajo-Segura” could mean “ruin” for local farmers.
The caudal of water transferred to the River Segura is threatend by moves from Castilla la Mancha to increase its minimum water reserves.
The Union of Small Farmers, the UPA, will mount an infomration stall in the Gran Via duyring Friay´s market to collect signatures on a petition.
The Mayor of Calasparra, Jesús Navarro, speaking on Calasparra Radio, said: “If the demands of Castilla la Mancha concerning level of water reserves in Entrepeñas y Buendía are approved this could mean the end of the trasvase Tajo-Segura and would “bring the ruin” for agriculture in Calasparra.
It is mainly the local rice farmers who use irrigation water from the River Segura as most local agriculture is served by water from the Argos Reservoir.
