WARNING: FALSE GAS REPS ABOUT

The police have issued a warning to elderly and vulnerable householders in the region not to open their doors to workmen claiming they are from the gas companies.
If you haven´t called them don´t open your door to them, warn the local police, as fraudulent gas board reps prey on mainly elderly householders.
Their modus operando is to pose as  technicians  from the gas company, frighten householders by advising them of the danger of “faulty appliances or tubing” and, once they gain access  to the property, stealing money a jewellery. They also charge exhorbitant prices for “unnecessary work.”
According to the local police, householders should not allow any unknown person into their homes and should never trust anyone claiming to be from a public company or utility.
“They will use any excuse to access the property,” they warn.
If you receive a phone call, purporting to be from a utilty company, local or regional government or offering a cash prize, do not give out personal information or bank details, the warning continues.
If householders have suspicious callers they should contact the National Police on 091.
As yet there have been no reports of these activities in Calasparra but these fraudsters are active in the region so householders are warned to take extreme care when strangers call at the door by phone.
