TOWN HALL TO MAINTAIN BASIC SOCIAL SERVICES UNTIL NEXT YEAR

The full committee of the Town Hall has approved a reform of the statutes which will change the name of the Social Services of the North East Murcia region in an attempt to stop it disappearing and maintain basic social services until December 2015.
When the new law changing the role of local administrations, such as the Town Hall, comes into full effect local adminstrations like Calasparra with less than 20,000 inhabititants will lose responsibility for social services in the area. This responsibility will rest with the regional government and, if they fail to assume that responsbility, central government will pay providers.
However, until December 2015, when the full effect of the law comes into force, the Town Hall will maintain the current basic level of services.
The Mayor of Calasparra, Jesus Navarro, says this is only one example of the responsibilities which will pass from the local adminstration to the regional government under the law. Others include, education, the nursery, the Music School and the Sports Schools.
“They will take away our responsibility for education but oblige us to pay the costs of maintaining the educational centres,” he said.
