One of the victims of the torrential rain, which saw 66 litres of water fall per square metre, was the newly painted Caverina Football Ground with the pitch, the changing rooms and the terraces flooded, resulting in the cancellation of the first league game for the local newly promoted GH Seguridad Calasparra FC.
Almost 64 litres of the total 66 fell on Sunday evening and Monday morning blocking drains, flooding businesses, underbuilds, cellars and garages throughout Calasparra.
The calles Cerca, Poeta Miguel Hernández and Caverina were worst affected, and some residents of the Caverina, accustomed to flooding in the area, took the precaution of drving their vehicles out of underground garages before they flooded. In some cases the Civil Protection had to intervene to pump out the water.
Noone was hurt and only one road, which crosses Cañada Verde at Cañada Manique, collapsed temporarily under the quantity of water.
The prediction for the rest of September is for lower temperatures with sunshine.
