THE SWEETEST PROTEST OF THE YEAR

Do you know what you are getting when you buy a pot of honey in Spain?
It may be Spanish honey mixed with honeys from other parts of the world or have hardly any honey in it at all.
Now 25 local bee keepers are joining the national protest in Madrid tomorrow, Thursday, to demand clearer labelling on honey so customers buying honey know what they are taking home, and better controls on imported products, sold as honey.
Local bee keeper, Antonio López, told Radio Calaspara: “Consumers have the right to know where products come from, given that many import products have the minimum percentage of Spanish honey.”
Spanish bee keepers cannot compete with the low prices of these imported products, which are often adulterated with other substances and/or have mixes of different honeys.
He went on to advise consumers not to trust cheap, liquid honeys and to buy honey with Spanish origins, which is “solid and crystalized.”
Even though the Ministry of Agriculture has announced changes of labels on honey the protest tomorrow will go ahead.
Between 1,500 and 1,600 tons of honey is produced in the Murcia region annually.
