The National Association of Consumers in Murcia is calling on everyone to switch off their lights for five minutes at 7pm tonight in protest against the elevated cost of elecricity and the latest price hike in January.
The object of the protest is to demand that the Government introduces a new regulated tariff in place of the current system in which big business fixes the price and there is a lack of transparency.
Other motives for the grand “switch off” (apagón) are to demand an audit of the electricity company´s debt and to prohibit the companies cutting off electricity for families in debt during winter.
During 2013 electricity prices rose by 11% and due to rise again on January 1 by 2.3%. Over the last 10 years the price of electricity has increased by 78%.
The consumer organisation is calling on everyone to join the protest and send a strong message to the Government and the electricity companies.
