SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL REFLEXOLOGIST!

International Council of Reflexologists 10th Annual World Reflexology Week September 18 to 25, 2011

Reflexology is a form of holistic medicine which attempts to harmonise all three elements of well being: mind, body and spirit.

The origins of reflexology can be traced back to ancient texts, drawings and artifacts which provide evidence that many ancient civilizations, including the Chinese, Egyptians and Indians, and surprisingly even the early Russians, used a form of pressure therapy similar to reflexology, as a way of promoting good health.
Linked with other ancient oriental therapies, such as acupuncture and acupressure, reflexology is based upon a belief that good health is governed by the balance of the physical, spiritual and emotional energy which flows through invisible channels, or zones, in the body.
Reflexology is a particular form of massage which involves working with the thumbs and the fingers, using specialized massage techniques, on reflex areas which are found in the feet and the hands. By massaging these reflex points, it is possible to treat the different areas of the body as every part of the feet and hands corresponds to a specific part of the body.
In a Reflexology session both feet or hands will be massaged to treat the whole body.
Reflexology is more commonly applied to the feet, but the hands can be worked if it is inappropriate to work the feet. The hands are easily worked on for self-treatment.
Reflexology is a holistic therapy which is used to treat many ailments and most people will feel benefit from treatments.
In addition to its use as a treatment of ill-health, Reflexology can be used to maintain good health and as a prevention of illness.
Another great benefit of Reflexology treatment is its use as a means of relaxation. Many people suffer from stress, tension and an inability to relax, all of which can lead to ill-health. A Reflexology treatment is an easy and extremely pleasant way of helping the body relax.
Because of the simplicity of this therapy, Reflexology is often viewed in a sceptical way. This should not deter anyone from trying a therapy which benefits the whole body by simply massaging the feet.

Potential benefits of reflexology can include:
 Reduced stress
 Feelings of deep relaxation
 Increased energy levels
 The release of endorphins, the body´s feel good hormones (which can also provide pain relief)
 Improved circulation
 More efficient removal of impurities and toxins
 A stronger immune system
 A sense that the whole body is better balanced or in harmony
