A million drivers in Spain break the speed limit with lethal consequences, according to data released by the Director General of Traffic as more speed traps were put in place this week as part of a safety campaign.
Announcing that 300 road deaths every year are caused by speeding the DGT claims this number would be reduced by a quarter if drivers respected the speed limits.
The DGT has called on local and regional authorities to join the Speed Safety Campaign which is being held this week in 25 european countries, simultaneously.
The DGT has also underlined drink driving or driving under the influence of drugs as other major causes of accidents on the road.
The 90kph speed limit on national roads is the limit regularly broken. According to the statistics four out of every 10 drivers break these speed limits: 25% by 10 kph and 12% by 20 kph.
Controls will be increased this week on national roads due to these statistics and the high mortality rate: eight out of every 10 fatalities ocurr on national roads.
