SPECTACULAR PRICE HIKES SINCE THE INTRODUCTION OF THE EURO

Prices have risen continually since the introduction of the euro as official currency in Spain 10 years ago.
Housing has risen by 66%, food by 48% and bread by 85%, according to statistics released today by the Organization of Consumers.
The consumer organization notes that the euro was unpopular from the day it was introduced and between September 2001 and January 2002 bread prices rose by an average of 24%, the tickets for buses and underground by 6%, prices in bars by 7% and the cinema by 9%.

Since 2002 the average shopping basket has continued to rise in price. The most spectacular, at 116%, is the cost of potatoes which have gone from 0.32 euros to 0.69 a kilo. Eggs experienced the second biggest price hike rising from 0.07 each to 0.15 euros. Milk has risen by 48%, rice by 45%, olive oil by 33%, beef by 36% and pork by 26%.

However, over the same period salaries have risen by less than 14%. In 2002 the average salary was 19,802 euros gross and in 2009 this rose to just 22,511 euros gross.
Property prices have also risen considerably over the past 10 years, according to the OCU. New houses cost an average of 1.453 euros a square metre in 2000 rising to 2,419 euros in June this year.

The products that have fallen in price are televisions, music systems and DVDs which cost around 62% less than 10 years ago. Video cameras cost 6% less, cameras 72% less and electrical domestic appliances cost an average of 4% less.
