RESIDENTS RETURN HOME AFTER SUNDAY’S FIRE

The residents of Las Minas and Salmerón, evacuated from their homes to Calasparra on Sunday, were allowed to return home last night despite “active” status of the fire.
The fire, which started in Hellin, has been pronounced “stabilized but active.” A total of 194 fire officers and volunteers and 49 vehicles continue to work on extinguishing the fire which they hope to bring under control during today. Work has continued throughout the night and six helicopters resumed dampening down at the crack of dawn this morning.
Calasparra has also accommodated many of the national emergency services currently on duty in the area and who will remain here until the fire has been officially brought under control.
The devastating fire which has ravaged across some of the region’s most spectacular countryside is already being called an ecological disaster.
