It is no longer necessary to take a boat to visit the Abrigos del Pozo cave in Calasparra, which is the site of one of the most important examples of cave drawings in the Mediterrenean and listed by UNESCO as part of the world patrimony in 1998.
The Government Delegate, Joaquín Bascuñana, accompanied by the Mayor of Calasparra, Jesus Navarro, and the Director of Promotion, Moisés Lázaro, visited the archeological site yesterday.
The entrances of the cave have been restored and refurbished and a path leading to the cave, including a wooden bridge for disabled access, now leads directly to the entrance.
Work on the entrance began in 2009 and has cost 440.371 euros, 75% funded by central government through the 1% Cultural Plan and 25% funded by the local Town Hall.
The Mayor said: «This is a very important day for Calasparra and the region of Murcia as we have added value to a very important archeological discovery and we have created disabled access.”
Archeological work will continue at the site.
