Philip Morris has raised the price of its brands of cigarettes by 15 cents from today, hot on the heels of rival, Altadis, which increased the price of brands such as Fortuna, Ducado and Nobel by 20 cents last week.
The price hikes may signify another “price war” similar to April 2011.
Marlboro now cost 4.65 euros; Chesterfield 4.35 euros; and L and M (hard packet) 4.10 euros and the soft packet version costs 4 euros.
Rolling tobacco and cigarette papers have also risen in price.
Cigarette sales in Spain have fallen by 33% since 2009.
