MAYOR RENOUNCES SALARY AND TOWN HALL MEETINGS WILL BE TELEVISED

It’s all change at the Town Hall where the PSOE Socialist Party lost its overall majority at the recent elections and just before last week’s extraordinary local authority meeting the Mayor announced he would renounce on his 120,000 euro salary as he takes up his new position as delegate for North East Murcia on the regional government.
Although the 120,000 euros will represent a financial bonus for the Town Hall over the next four years it was not sufficient for the combined forces of the PP (Partido Popular) and IU (Izquierda Unida) who demanded and secured further savings on salaries and departmental expenditure. There will be further details released this week but a motion was proposed and passed that departmental savings would be reduced by 30%; that only one head of department would receive a full time salary and that this salary would be considerably reduced.
The extraordinary meeting last Thursday was a heated affair with the IU pushing for much greater savings and for all expenses to be “invoice based.” Although the motion which was passed eventually was agreed unanimously the IU demands for “greater transparency and invoice based expenses” for heads of departments failed.
All future meetings of the Town Hall will be televised by local TV companies and there will be an open session for questions from the public. Anyone wishing to ask a question should lodge the written question with the Town Hall 48 hours before the full local authority meetings which take place on the last Thursday of the month.
This webpage will publish the exact details of all decision taken at last Thursday´s meeting, including the list of new heads of departments, as soon as the written confirmation is available.
