The Mayor of Calasparra, Jesus Navarro, is calling on members of the public to help prevent more local forest fires as several weekend fires were declared as deliberate.
He said: The fires “put our local landscape, already seriusly damaged by fire, at further risk, as well as the safety of local people, particularly the fire fighters.”
Over the weekend three blazes were extinguished by the emergency services. Firstly, as reported in nexonr, a fire near the Puerto Cave on early Saturday evening.
Secondly, at 9pm Saturday night near the river on the Esparragal road where 4,000 square metres burned in an area known as the Cortijo del Tío Raimundo.
Lastly, in the Ecce Homo area at 10.40pm on Sunday night canes near the river were set alight destroying 250 square metres of river bank.
All of the fires appear to have been deliberately set.
Anyone with any information or who sees anything suspicious should contact the local police or ring the emergency number 112.
