The Argentine artista,
King Africa, will provide the music for this year´s Carnival in Calasparra
when, traditionally, the most conservative and sane residents go completely
mad!!
There will be ample opportunities to dress up with street processions and the
annual Best Costume Competition for individuals and groups, theatre and plenty
of music and fun.
The Mayor of Calasparrra, Jose Velez, officially presented the Carnival programme
this week, with local councilors for Fiestas and Culture, Antonio Merino and
Teresa Garcia.
Traditionally held on the first Saturday after Ash Wednesday, “Sábado de Piñata”
is the moment that dozens of residents dress up in costumes and masks and mount
a procession through the streets of the town. Music, humour and banter are the
predominant notes of this activity which is celebrated all over North West
Murcia.
The week before, on Carnival Tuesday at 5.30pm, it is the turn of local
schoolchildren to parade in fancy dress and this year they will be accompanied
by the theatre group from Madrid, Sinfin, presenting “Los Piratas” in the Plaza
de la Corredera.
On Saturday March 9 King Africa will be in Cine Rosales from 11.30pm where
prizes for the best costumes will be presented. Entrance is free of charge.
