The Izquierda Unida (United Left and Greens) successfully tabled a motion for an external audit of the local authority´s accounts at a full meeting of the Town Hall Council last week.
The motion was supported by the IU, the Partido Popular and three votes from the ruling PSOE Socialist Workers Party, including the Deputy Mayor, soon to be Mayor, Pepe Veléz.
“We have nothing to hide,” said Pepe Veléz, breaking ranks with his PSOE party which generally opposed the motion as “unneccessary, incoherent and electionist.”
There were abstentions amongst the ranks of the PSOE including the current Mayor, Jesus Navarro.
However, the IU councillor, Ricardo Garcia, said the people of Calasparra did not know the true financial situation at the Town Hall and an external audit before the end of the current government term was necessary.
Jesus Navarro, the current Mayor who announced his imminent resgination last week, was presiding over his last “pleno” (full Town Hall Council Meeting) last Thursday. Putting aside the moments of tensión and heated debate he thanked all members of the corporation including the opposition for their companionship and hard work during his term as Mayor. His remarks were greeted by a round of applause.
Pepe Veléz is expected to take over the role as Mayor within a few days.
