There were 39 more names on the unemployment register in Calasparra last month, with the majority of the job losses in agriculture and the services sector.
In June there were 1,026 local jobless compared to 1,065 in July.
However, two weeks ago 30 local people started temporary contracts through an employment workshop as part of a programme to promote rural employment through grants. Calasparra will receive 292,458.40€ through the scheme which will pay for “three blocks” of work for people on the unemployment register.
Participants will clean the mountainsides and rivers, do gardening and maintain public parks among other projects.
