The Sanctuary is counting the cost of the recent flooding, caused when the Segura Water Board pumped 8.6 millliion litres daily into the River Segura from the reservoirs Talave, Fuensanta, Camarillas and Cenajo.
The bottom terrace, where the barbecues are situated, was the worst affected. The walkway has collapsed in places, pillars have been damaged or washed away and benches and barriers knocked over by the power of the water. The area, which is closest to the river, was the most frequented by pilgrims and visitors.
When the flooding presented a danger to the public the local police put special security measures in place, however, since April 11 the water has begun to recede allowing the Sanctuary Management Committee to begin to assess the damage.
