The opening speech of the Easter celebrations was in the safe hands of Pascuala Pérez who thrilled a packed St Peter´s Church on Saturday with hope and enthusiasm as she spoke about the traditional processions, past and present, that make Easter in Calasparra so special.
After the speech as is traditional at this time of year the annual homages were made.
First of all to the “Nazareno de Oro, in the gift of the Town Hall, was presented to the Cornet and Drum Band of the San Juan Evangelista y la Dolorosa religious brotherhood.
The High Committee of all the brotherhoods, the Cabildo Superior de Cofradías, also paid homage to Teresa Martínez to mark her more than 30 years work with the (brotherhood) Cofradía de la Samaritana.
The Gold Broach was awarded to the Calasparra Choir for their magnificent performance with a programme based on the works of Karl Jenkins.
Prizes were handed out to winners of the school drawing competition and tributes were paid to the volunteer drivers who transport the statues of the saints every year.
