The Easter processions will not be televised this year in an effort to try and increase the public participation in a Calasparrian tradition which has been declared of Regional Touristic Interest.
The religious brotherhoods are also appealing for volunteers “who are interested in preserving the traditions of Easter week” to take part in the processions.
“Let´s not leave one tunic in the wardrobe,” say the organisers as they ask volunteers to present themselves at the offices of the different brotherhoods this week.
The programme of Easter processions in Calasparra has been under threat for several years due to a lack of volunteers to carry the great thrones with the statues of the Saints and to form the “armies” with tunics and hoods representing the different religious brotherhoods.
In recent years all the processions have been broadcast live on the two local television channels. The move this year to ban live coverage is another attempt to revive interest in the Easter tradtions.
“The processions make no sense without the crowds,” Martin Sánchez, President of the Committee organising Easter week activities told Radio Calasparra.
