After eight years of legal wrangling the courts have rejected an appeal by the company, Conservas Fernandez, and opened the door for new owners to take over the plant.
The plant, known locally as the Diiosa, closed in 2009 throwing 300 permanent staff and 400 temporary staff out of work. Now new owners could come in and created 300 local jobs.
Calasparra Town Hall has supported the work force at the plant and was the only creditor to oppose the viability of the former owner´s plan.
Now the Mayor of Calasparra, Jose Velez, has announced that during September there will be meetings with companies interested in purchasing the plant.
“We hope to complete work to fine tune the machinery at the plant in the shortest time possible,” he added.
Last January the Mayor accompanied former workers and the lawyer, Antonio Mengual, on a visit to the plant. He said later: “Workers were able to see that all the installations and machinery were in good condition” and that “it would be reasonably easy to put the plant into action again rapidly.”
