Plans to introduce a maximum national speed limit of 90 kph on all national roads, including those with no current speed limit, will be introduced by the Department of traffic within this year.
The lower speed limits, in force on some stretches of national roads, will not be affected by the change.
The Department is also considering raising the speed limit on motorways “where there is no major incidence of accidents” to 130 kph.
A major road safety campaign against driving under the influence of drink and/or drugs has been launched and traffic police state they are “carrying out road side controls every hour of every day.”
So far some 20% of drivers tested during the “Zero Tolerance” campaign have proved to be driving under the influence of drugs.
Measures will also be introduced to reinforce the “points scheme” for driving licences and to change the driving theory test to include more questions on “aptitude and suitability for responsible
