Just as the High St in under threat in the UK as small shops close under the pressure of competition from online sales and the big supermarkets and stores, in Calasparra small shops and businesses are struggling to survive.
For many of us part of the charm of living in Calasparra is that we can buy fresh meat, (and when I say fresh I mean days not weeks old); homemade bread and cakes; fresh fish; and a mountain of artisan foods and products, including, of course, our famous rice. However, we could lose all these due to the convenience and competition of shopping in large supermarkets already here in Calasparra.
Of course, there are many products that are only available in the supermarkets, however, there is no substitute for real bread and fresh meat and personal, friendly service also goes a long way.
Now there is a campaign to support local shops and businesses and the organisers give some good reasons to do so.

Because they give a boost to the local economy.
Because they create employment.
Because they strengthen ties in the community.
Because they take part in and support local activities.
Because they suffer unfair competition from large supermarkets and stores.
