Despite the Yellow and Orange weather warnings and fear that the DANA would cause major flooding Calasparra once again escaped virtually unscathed.
Residents today are thanking their lucky stars they live in Calasparra where just 11 litres of rain fell per square metre and the storms and strong winds caused no damage, according to the Local Police.
A minor inconvenience was the temporary closure of the Valentin road due to excess water from the Argos reservoir being discharged downstream to the Quipar reservoir. The road was re-opened in the early hours of this morning.
The river Segura was swollen by the rain as it passed through the Sanctuary grounds but failed to break its banks and flood the Sanctuary Square as feared.
The rain that did fall will be very welcome as Calasparra, and the region of Murcia, that has been in the throes of a severe drought for nearly two years. Heavy rain at the head of the river Segura and in the region´s reservoirs will hopefully alleviate the drought and make the imminent irrigation water restrictions unnecessary.
