Yesterday, December
28, the equivalent of April Fool´s Day in Spain, and Juan Pelotero and his gang
were roaming the streets of central Calasparra distributing fines and playing
tricks on the residents.
The Day of the Innocents is also a day to play tricks on your friends and
family and, these days, on social media. In fact, some clown announced that the
clock in the famous local clock tower in Calle Mayor was broken and that the
Town Hall would be launching 12 rockets to mark midnight on New Year´s Eve as
the bell would not toll. Or was it a joke? We will have to wait and see.
However, the roots of the Day of the Innocents is not a subject for hilarity as
it marks the day that King Herod ordered the murder of every first born in an
effort to kill the “new messiah.”
