All parties supported a motion at a special meeting of the full Town Hall Committee calling for the continuation of the water transfer from the River Tajo which provides irrigation water for the Calasparra rice.
In total the meeting approved seven proposals which include maintaining the current volume of the transfer; the treatment of residual water from the major populations which is pumped directly into the Tajo; and the creation of a Commission of state and regional representatives and technicians, local farmers and environmental activitists to plan and develop and to modify the ecological caudal and other factors affecting the rivers.
The water is transferred from the River Tajo to the River Segura mainly to support the local rice industry. Castilla de la Mancha has made various proposals to modify the water tranfer which include reducing the volume.
