A local animal charity is appealing for funds, volunteers and signatures on a petition to mount a refuge for abandoned dogs in the North West area of Murcia.
President of Dog Rescue, Calasparra, Ana Guirao, was speaking on Radio Calasparra following the dramatic rescue of a tiny alsation puppy from the river last weekend.
She said: “We have 20 dogs we are currently caring for and a few volunteers who help out every day of the week and assume the cost of looking after the dogs, injections, operations etc.”
Most of the dogs rescued by the association are simply abandoned, although many were in a very poor state when they were found.
“Animal cruelty is punishable by prison in Spain,” she reminded listeners to Radio Calasparra..
Appealing for volunteers, Ana Guirao underlined the different activitities volunteers can undertake such as walking the dogs or helping out at the centre where the dogs are cared for. “Its very satisfying work,” she added.
The Association is also appealing for homes. “We have many dogs in our care and the ideal would be, once they have had their injections and are well enough, that they can find a permanent home.”
Dog Rescue Calasparra is also running a campaign to install a refuge for abandoned dogs in the North West area of Murcia and is appealing for signatures on a petition.
Appealing to the different regional and local administrations she appeals to them to help change a sad fact of life here in Spain: that Spain heads the list for animal cruelty in Europe.
