Murcian stockbreeders have bred some 6,000 mountain sheep (ovejas montesinas), 56% of the national total, which is registered as a “breed in danger of extinction.”
“They are a valuable part of our genetic patrimony,” according to the Director General of Stockbreeding and Fish, who claims their special characteristics justify their inclusión in the European Programme of Rural Development for 2014 to 2020.
Stockbreeders and experts are meeting in Calasparra over the next two days at the VI Feria Ganadera (Stockbreeders Fayre) to consider the demands of the breeders and to examine the conservation programmes, assistance and protection available for these breeds.
There is an exhibition of various rare breeds of regional stock, open to the public, in the gardens of the Casa de la Cultura.
