In a week when politicians have been sent to prison without bail on alleged corruption charges, regional councillors have resigned and six local mayors are under suspicion, José Vélez, acting Mayor of Calasparra has signed an ethical code for transparency and against corruption.
Included in the code is the proposal that no public servant should stay in their post if they have been charged with corruption.
Vélez, accompanied by the PSOE candidate for the Presidency of the Murcia Region, Rafael González Tovar, and the rest of the mayoral candidates of the region, signed the ethical code in front of the regional government headquarters in San Esteban, Murcia, and called for “the return of dignity, decency and honour to politics.
The code underlines the intention of the PSOE to continue to fight against corruption and calls for zero tolerance regarding “the embarrassing situation” in the region with cases of corruption in the highest ranks of the regional government.
Amongst the clauses of the code is that no public servant, candidate or member with responsibility in the PSOE who has been charged and is being investigated for corruption should continue in their post.
Another clause limits the term of the President to eight years and guarantees a public administration which is “transparent, austere and is at the service of the citizens.”
