TOWN FACES FACES UP TO MARKET TRADERS

Calasparra Town Hall has told striking stallholders on the textile and footwear section of the weekly market to accept increased pitch charges or go elsewhere.
Market traders in the non food sector went on strike this week against the 80% increase in pitch charges last Friday and refused to mount their stalls. They are threatening to strike again next week.
However, José Veles, speaking on Radio Calasparra, said the market traders must “make their own personal decisions about whether to come to the market in Calasparra or not and
confirmed that the 80% rise in charges would remain unchanged.
Calasparra has the lowest pitch charges in the whole of the región of Murcia, said Veles, and these traders pay twice, three times and sometimes four times as much in other towns without complaining. “They don´t like the new location of the food and vegetable stalls either,” he added.
It would be shame for Calasparra to lose the traditional market “we have known all our lives,”he said, “but if that is their deicions so be it.”
The food and vegetable section of the market seem to have accepted the new charges and functioned as normal last week. A situation which is expected to continue.
