Most of our intelligent mobile phones are able to recieve messages from the Protection Civil with warnings from the Spanish authorities or regional government that can be activated when an emergency represents danger to the public.
This system designed to warn the public, known as ES-Alert, warns of floods, chemical accidents and terrorist attacks.
The system belongs to the Protection Civil, a public security service of the Spanish Home Office Ministry (Interior) that has been put at the disposal of the regional governments whose reponsbility it is to activate it and send a messages to the population.
This system can save lives, however, it is de-activated by default and depends on the individual to activate it. An explanation of how to activate it on your phone appears below.
Android:
- Go to Settings
- Go to Notifications
- Go to Advanced settings
- Search for ‘Alertas de emergencia inalámbricas’ or activate the boxes ‘Permitir alertas’ and ‘Pre-Alerta de Protección Civil’
Apple:
- Go to Settings
- Go to notifications
- Activate ‘Pre-Alertas de Protección Civil’ (in the bottom part)
In order that emergency warnings such as the recent «DANA» function it is necessary to download the latest versions of the operating system on your mobile.
