MAYOR REASSURES SHOPKEEPERS OVER CORREDERA PLANS

Local shopkeepers received assurances from the Mayor of Calasparra, Jesus Navarro, yesterday that proposals to pedestrianise the Plaza de la Corredera and the Gran Via were not a “done deal” despite receiving three party support at a recent Town Hall meeting.
The Mayor told shopkeepers, who are object to the proposals claiming their businesses faced ruin, that the proposal of the IU (United Left) to ban traffic from central Calasparra had been amended by the PSOE and PP parties to cater for a “public consultation.”
“The idea is that no one will be prejudiced and everyone will be consulted,” said the Mayor on Radio Calasparra, “Nothing has been decided.”
He went on to say that the roads around the Plaza de la Corredera formed the access to the old town and that traffic diverted from the square would increase problems on other central residential roads.
“We will carry out a study of traffic circulating around the town centre in order to find the best way to make Calasparra safer. It may be that controlling the speed of traffic, which should be a maximum of 20 kph in the town centre, by cameras and erecting barriers to protect pedestrians will be more effective,” he commented.
